Owner: Elk Grove Unified School District

The rHouse (Resource House) project was developed by the Elk Grove Unified School District and the Cosumnes Oaks High School’s Architectural Design and Engineering Academy. The purpose of the project was to reflect the intelligent use of resources in a functional classroom.

The project included sustainable features such as a geothermal heat pump system, hybrid solar and tankless water heater, photovoltaic solar power systems, solar tubes for daylight harvesting, as well as other green building techniques used for construction and landscaping.

The geothermal heat pump system, designed by Meline Engineering, provides a nominal 4 tons of heating and cooling for the class room / home by exchanging heat with (4) 320’ deep vertical loops buried beneath the drought tolerant landscaping.
